Internship Notes - Beijing

Today is this month's cutoff day, and I'm getting ready to calculate how much I've earned this month. Salary isn't the main point; the main point is that for a newcomer who has never worked before, the experiences and attempts during this period are relatively valuable. When I first joined, I was very nervous, afraid of doing anything that might not conform to the rules. I had my parents' usual rules in mind, and I was also worried about making mistakes on the spot. On the first day, I was assigned to read documents and complete the onboarding checklist, and it seemed like there wasn't much to do (in fact, there really wasn't much to do). This state has continued until now. I guess it might be because I was placed in, and many highly specialized tasks can't be picked up all at once.

Today is this month's cut-off day, and I'm getting ready to calculate how much I've earned this month.

On the first day, I was assigned to read documents and complete the onboarding check-list, and it seemed like there wasn't much to do (in fact, there really wasn't much to do). This state has continued until now. I guess it might be because I was placed in, and many highly specialized tasks can't be picked up all at once. I actually really want to have substantive output, such as producing some conclusions or reports, but I've spent the entire month in the learning process.

This week I was seconded to Beijing to do some paperwork for colleagues in the incubation group. Actually, there are mainly two things: handling confidentiality agreements and translating English contracts into Chinese. It doesn't look very difficult, and in fact it isn't difficult.

On the first morning, I arrived at 9:30. The bed was very comfortable, so I got up very early. Surprisingly, my days at the hotel were even more diligent. In the morning, I groomed and dressed carefully, from washing up to carefully applying perfume. And ironing shirts: for the first time, I ironed my own white shirt flat. Wearing a shirt that still had a bit of warmth and smoothness was really satisfying. But not everything went smoothly. The second time, I wanted to iron a shirt jacket flat but found it had been burned with a hole — different fabrics are suitable for different temperatures; if it's too hot, it will scorch and melt the fabric. And the material of this piece of clothing happened to be polyester fiber (is it nylon?), which should be the type with the lowest applicable temperature.

On Tuesday, I arranged to chat with the department's big leader, classmate L, like a "push-hands" contest to feel each other out. I probably lost completely, and it was also like a chess player who couldn't even tell win or loss. My takeaway was that I found out the source of selling official positions and titles should be L, although it was something that could be imagined. It should have been guessable just from knowing the organizational structure. So later, when I said, "I don't know if there will be a chance to return to ByteDance next year," classmate L must have been complaining inwardly.

There were still some pleasant topics in between, such as talking about server supply and recycling, mentioning the issue of data erasure standards for retired HDDs, and revealing my familiarity with IDC fundamentals. Also, I expressed my interest in SCM, especially PM.

The work these days has been easy, so I finished it in almost half a week. The colleagues I connected with all said my output was high. But there were indeed some oversights, fortunately not reflected on the partner's side. On Wednesday night, I discovered a problem and responded immediately. By Thursday noon, the entire process was completed.

On Friday, I slacked off and went to Prince Gong's Mansion. I bought some postcards.

That's it for this slacking-off diary...
